Kodagu was a kingdom rulled by the Hoysalas from the 11th to the 14th century A.D. and thereafter by the Vijayanagar kings and the Chengalvas. The Wodeyars of Kodagu ruled from the 17th to the 19th century. The British annexed Kodagu in 1834 after dethroning Chikkaveerarajendra Wodeyar. Huttari,

Huttari, which means "new rice" in Kodava tak is celebrated in the month of Marghashira (November or December). The family along with friends and workers led by one of the women carrying the traditional lamp, go to the fields and cut a few sheaves of paddy.
